Setting the highest international standards for environmental protection
Environmental protection is indispensable in deep mining. Deep-sea ecosystems have particular features of biodiversity. They are usually untouched, extremely diverse, inhabited by rare and unknown species, and recover very slowly from external intervention. All these aspects require an ongoing interdisciplinary dialogue in marine scientific research. A permanent challenge is to carry out comprehensive baseline studies and impact assessments and to ensure that all mining activities are continuously monitored.
DSMA is committed to meeting all environmental requirements, including, but not limited to, the following environmental and technology requirements: - precautionary approach
- preliminary studies
- best available technologies
- environmental management plans
- environmental impact assessments
- monitoring programmes and independent controls
- financial guarantees, liability and insurance.
DSMA is active in cooperation and exchange of views with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and NGOs.
