Uwe Karl-Heinz Jenisch teaches international law of the sea at the Walther Schücking Institute for International Law of the University of Kiel, Germany. He served also as a visiting professor of the World Maritime University WMU, Malmö/Sweden. He holds a Dr. jur. degree of the University of Kiel (1970) based on studies as a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School (1968). In May 2005 he was appointed honorary professor for law of the sea at the University of Kiel. Since then he is a member of the GEOMAR-based cluster of excellency “The Future Ocean”. Beginning in 1970 until 2003 he served as a councillor in several ministries of the Federal and Länder administration of Germany. His functions included international cooperation in space (1970-1973), EU affairs/international trade (1974-1980), mining and offshore industries (1980-1986), maritime transport and maritime policy (1987-2003).
From 1975-1982 he was a member of the German Law of the Sea Delegation and participated in all UNCLOS sessions of that period, with a special interest in the negotiating process of the law of the sea and the deepsea mining regime . Since then he is a member of various maritime and legal fora, including the Advisory Board of the DSMA. Throughout his career in Government Dr. Jenisch served as an officer of the German Navy Reserve with the latest rank of a Navy Captain.
Since 1968 he has published on subjects of the 3rd United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea, on regional marine environmental law and on industrial uses of the sea. Among the latest publications is a bibliography on the law of the sea covering the last 25 years. His current research focus is on marine mineral resources, maritime safety and security and on climate control. In this capacity he has been advising Governments including the European Parliament, the Governments of the North German States and the maritime industry.
