Brief Profile:
Water covers around 70% of the blue planet. It plays an essential role in our daily lives - for food, energy, transport and communication. It is therefore of utmost importance to protect and sustainably use our oceans.
The DSMA and the OceanTechnologies@Fraunhofer competence network will work closely together in the future to advance marine research and the development of forward-looking, sustainable technologies.
The competence network OceanTechnologies@Fraunhofer is now a member of the DSMA as an association of fourteen institutes and units of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. In future, the network will work together with the DSMA on the responsible extraction and use of mineral marine raw materials. Through the close exchange, both sides benefit from the extensive expertise and topic-specific know-how within the partnership.
In the context of the United Nations Decade of the Ocean, it is important to pool our knowledge and expertise and generate new ideas in this way. I am convinced that the collaboration between the DSMA and our network of expertise will bring extensive added value. Together we will develop novel technologies that contribute to responsible and sustainable deep-sea mining," says Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uwe Freiherr von Lukas (Fraunhofer IGD), as managing director of OceanTechnologies@Fraunhofer.
OceanTechnologies@Fraunhofer is considered the leading association for applied research in technological marine research in Europe. Experts from a wide range of fields such as IT, materials science, sensor technology, energy technology, robotics, aquaculture or automation and systems technology work together to design sustainable marine and underwater technology. The interdisciplinary competence network offers a broad portfolio to address the extensive challenges above and below water. Possible applications include autonomous underwater vehicles, stationary observatories or detection systems for pollutants.
The broad scientific profile makes it possible to react adequately and quickly to future demands from society and industry when it comes to protecting and sustainably using the oceans.
